Biotech Biocard Celiac Test is a rapid and reliable home test for the detection of coeliac disease from a fingertip blood sample. Coeliac disease is intolerance to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Some people with coeliac disease also react to oats.

What is gluten sensitivity (Coeliac disease)?

Coeliac disease is a lifelong condition which if left undiagnosed and untreated exposes you to an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, infertility and cancer. If you have coeliac disease, the presence of gluten in your diet causes your body’s immune system to attack the tiny, finger like projections (villi) which line your small intestine. In coeliac disease these villi become inflamed and then flattened causing a reduction in the absorption of essential nutrients from your food such as calcium and iron, which leads to a wide range of symptoms. Although the condition is triggered by your immune system, coeliac disease is different to an allergy as it does not involve IgE antibodies.

How does the Biocard Celiac Test Work?

The test identifies in just 10 minutes whether IgA transglutaminase antibodies, a key marker for coeliac disease, are present in a small finger prick blood drop.

How accurate is the Biocard Celiac Test?

In independent trials the Biocard Celiac Test was shown to be highly accurate (96%) when compared with intestinal biopsy and equally reliable to hospital laboratory blood tests. In rare circumstances, some people (2% of the population and 5% of coeliacs) may give a false negative result in laboratory tests as well as the Biocard test due to an IgA antibody deficiency. The test has been proven to be easy to use by lay persons and meets all necessary regulatory requirements including the IVD directive 98/79EC for home use.

A boxed kit containing:

• 1 x Aluminium pouch containing test
• 1 x Sterile lancet for obtaining a blood sample
• 1 x Vessel with a 10 ul glass capillary
• 1 x Alcohol soaked swab
• 1 x Plaster
• 1 x Vial with 0.5ml sample dilution buffer
• 1 x Instructions for Use

To conduct the test:

• Twist the grey cap until it bounces up. Continue to rotate the cap for at least one full round
• Gently massage the fingertip then clean it with the alcohol-soaked swab. Leave until the finger is dry. Warming up your finger will make sample collection easier
• Press the automatic lancet with the round opening firmly against the cleaned fingertip, and activate it with the button. The puncture is practically painless
• Press a drop of blood out of the fingertip. Open the plastic vessel and remove with caution the glass capillary. Hold the glass capillary horizontally in the drop until it has completely filled
• Place the filled glass capillary in the tube containing buffer and close the tube firmly with the cap. Shake the tube several times until the blood from the capillary is mixed completely with the buffer
• Remove the cap of the buffer tube again and place the test stick in the buffer tube. The level of the buffer should not exceed the max-level indicated on the test stick. Avoid any reagent drops or foam on the sides of the tube. The test result can be read after 5 minutes. Remove the test stick from the buffer tube for reading.

Interpreting your test result

Interpreting your result is simple, being similar to reading a pregnancy test. If your result is positive a red control line appears in the control field and a line forms in the test field as well. Your test result is negative if a red line appears in the control field only.
