What are FODMAPs?
FODMAP stands for Fermentable, Oglio-, Di-, Mono-saccarides and Polyols which are certain types of carbohydrates that are not easily absorbed in the small intestine which then pass into the large intestine, where bacteria ferment them. The combination of bacteria and FODMAP foods in the large intestine produces large amounts of gas that results in pain, bloating, diarrhoea and/or constipation, all typical symptoms of IBS. Following a low FODMAP diet for IBS has been shown to be effective in treating IBS symptoms. The low FODMAP diet is effective for about 70% of people with IBS symptoms.
Dr Hilary Jones, TV Doctor comments; "Lorisian 150 IBS Support could offer a lifeline to IBS sufferers who have either found it difficult to find a solution or who would like to try to reduce or avoid medication. The FODMAP diet is gaining increasing interest. The FODMAP diet does not, however, take into account an individual`s food and drink intolerances. By combining FODMAP advice alongside comprehensive food and drink intolerance testing Lorsian are now able to provide a tailored solution which may hold the answer for those seeking a dietary solution for their IBS symptoms."
Where does the FODMAP diet originate?
The Low FODMAP diet originated in Australia in 1991and was developed by the Monash University Department of Gastroenterology in Melbourne. They found that reducing dietary FODMAPs is an effective treatment for people with IBS symptoms.
