What are Essential Fats?

Scientists have given essential fats (a.ka. essential fatty acids or EFAs) their name because the body must have them to survive, but cannot synthesize them from any other substance we eat, so a direct food source is required. Hence, the name essential. There are many kinds of fats, but only two kinds of essential fats: omega 3 (n-3 or w3) and omega 6 (n-6 or w6), both of which are unsaturated fats.

Q.	I am confused - does Udo's Oil have omega 3,6 & 9 or only 3 & 6? I ask this because on the contents screen it says 3 & 6 only. Please clarify because I feel I'm being misled somewhere.
A.	It does contain all 3, however, the reason omega 9 is not included in the list is because it is not technically an essential fat as your body synthesises omega 9 from omega 3 & 6.

Q.	I am interested in this product, but, before ordering, could you confirm whether this supplement is safe for use when pregnant?
A.	Yes, it would be safe to take during pregnancy. In fact essential fats, omega 3 and 6 are extremely beneficial to the unborn child and help to ensure correct neural development. They are especially good from a vegetarian source such as flax seed as contained in Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend as fish oil supplements contain vitamin A. Excessive intake of vitamin A during pregnancy may be harmful to the unborn child.

Q.	Which is better, the capsules or the liquid?
A.	Capsules are always a compromise over the pure unrefined liquid as it means there is one more stage of processing plus the added expense of the capsuling process means they are also usually less economical. However, some find taking the oil to be inconvenient and so the capsules do make sense if you are unable to take the oil. They are also great if you are travelling and are unable to store the liquid in a refrigerator.

Q.	Can I extend the life of the oil by freezing it?
A.	Yes, sealed bottles can be kept for up to eight months refrigerated and for over two years in the freezer (oil shrinks when frozen so the glass/plastic bottles will not break). Simply remove the oil from the freezer the night before you intend to use it and place it in the refrigerator to defrost. Once opened, use within 8 weeks and keep refrigerated between uses.

Q.	Can you give this to children?
A.	Yes, children can take Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend too, in fact the omega 3 and 6 are extremely beneficial for developing brains and to keep skin, hair and nails healthy. You should reduce the intake based on the child's weight in relation to an adult. The following is a guideline to dosage for children: Under 3 years: 1 teaspoon every 2 days Ages 3 - 8: 1 teaspoon a day Ages 8 - 12: 1 tablespoon a day Over 12: 1-2 tablespoons per day

Q.	Is this product ok to take if you suffer from Coeliac disease?
A.	Udo's Choice Oil Blend is gluten free so should prove to be no problem for those suffering from Coeliac disease.

Q.	What does this Flax seed oil help to cure?
A.	Flax seed is nature's richest source of omega 3, typically 57%. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid and is essential for a whole range of bodily processes including metabolic, hormonal and neural. It improves brain function, aids concentration and reduces instances of conditions such as ADHD in children. Omega 3 also plays an important role in the health of hair skin and nails. The importance of omega 3 in the diet should not be underestimated and a typical western diet has a poor ratio of omega 3 meaning supplementation with a product such as this is often recommended.

Q.	I asked recently whether Udo's Choice Oil Blend was safe to use during pregnancy. Although your reply stated that this oil was entirely safe, I am concerned that it contains Evening Primrose Oil and that this may not be safe to use whilst pregnant. Could you put my mind at rest?
A.	There is a small amount of Organic Evening Primrose Oil in Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil blend. Regarding EPO and pregnancy, no large scale studies have been carried out so the information is not available. There is no evidence to suggest it may be harmful and taken as part of a healthy balanced diet Evening Primrose Oil will provide essential fatty acids that are crucial during pregnancy. Udo's has done wonders for my dry skin, actually beating any moisturiser. Its softer and a little glowing. Absolutely must try.

Very versatile oil, tastes great, not bitter like flax alone. Have used it on porridge, in smoothies and in some cooking! Good support from Udo's website too. Excellent product albeit a tiny bit expensive.
