Why is this test important to me?
The cause of most urine infections is bacteria that colonise (settle) around the urethra (urine tube) and then ascend into the rest of the urinary tract system. The condition ranges from cystitis (a mild but distressing inflammation of the bladder) to severe infections of the kidney.
Symptoms of a UTI
Symptoms can differ, depending on whether the infection affects the lower (bladder and urethra) or upper (kidneys and ureters) of the urinary tract. Some common symptoms are burning on the passing urine, frequent need to urinate, cloudy urine with an offensive odour, pains in the loins and even fever or chills. The most important factor in maintaining the sterility of the urinary tract is emptying the bladder completely and frequently.
When do I perform this test?
This test can be performed anytime, day or night.
What does the result tell me?
The test detects protein, nitrite and leukocytes not normally present in urine. If protein is present the indicator test panel appears as a blue/green colour. If nitrites are present the indicator test panel appears as a pink colour. If leukocytes are present the indicator test panel appears as a purple colour.
