Damiana was used as an aphrodisiac by the ancient Mayans, and for over a century it has been used by the modern populations of both Central and South America as a way of strengthening the body

The volatile oils are probably part of the reason that this tea is also used as a loving cup and the content of sitosterol may also account for this.
