DLPA

DLPA

D,L-Phenylalanine – a balanced amino acid blend

A unique 50/50 blend of the two mirror-image forms of the amino acid phenylalanine, DLPA combines the body’s natural neurotransmitter-building pathway with a complementary compound studied for its support of comfortable mood and natural pain perception.

What is DLPA?

DLPA stands for D,L-phenylalanine, a supplement that combines two mirror-image (enantiomeric) forms of the amino acid phenylalanine in equal proportion. L-phenylalanine is the naturally occurring form found in protein-containing foods and used by the body to build proteins and synthesise key neurotransmitters, while D-phenylalanine is a synthetic mirror-image form not found naturally in the diet, which has been studied for a distinct set of properties separate from its more familiar L-counterpart. By combining both forms, DLPA supplements are designed to provide the neurotransmitter-building benefits of the L-form alongside the complementary properties uniquely associated with the D-form, offering a more rounded supplemental profile than either form would provide in isolation.

Supporting neurotransmitter production

L-phenylalanine serves as the metabolic starting point for a cascade of important neurotransmitter synthesis within the body, being converted first into tyrosine, and subsequently into dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline – collectively known as the catecholamines, which play central roles in mood, motivation, mental alertness, and the body’s response to stress and challenge. By providing the body with adequate raw material for this conversion pathway, the L-phenylalanine component of DLPA supports the foundational building blocks needed for healthy catecholamine production, which in turn underpins feelings of motivation, mental clarity, and an engaged, alert mood throughout the day.

The role of D-Phenylalanine

The D-form of phenylalanine has been studied for a separate and distinct property: its potential to support the body’s natural pain-modulating systems by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for breaking down enkephalins, the body’s own naturally produced pain-modulating compounds, related to endorphins. By helping to preserve the activity of these natural compounds for longer, D-phenylalanine is thought to support the body’s own inherent capacity for comfortable perception of everyday physical discomfort. This distinctive mechanism, separate from the neurotransmitter-building pathway of the L-form, is the basis for combining both isomers together in a single DLPA supplement, offering complementary support across both mood and natural comfort pathways simultaneously.

Using DLPA

DLPA supplements are typically taken on an empty stomach to support optimal absorption, away from other amino acid-rich foods that might compete for the same absorption pathways. As with many amino acid supplements that influence neurotransmitter pathways, effects can take some time to become noticeable, with many users following a consistent daily routine over several weeks to assess the full benefit. It is worth noting that phenylalanine in any form is not suitable for those with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU), who must strictly limit their phenylalanine intake from all sources, and anyone taking antidepressant medication, particularly MAOIs, should seek professional guidance before using DLPA given its influence on neurotransmitter pathways.
