Amino Acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, making them vital for building and maintaining muscle fibres in the body. However, they also work to help synthesise your hormones and support optimal brain function to help reduce stress, anxiety and sleeplessness.
There are essential and non-essential amino acids. Although crucial to healthy muscle growth and function and optimal brain function, the human body cannot produce essential amino acids on its own, so we must source them through our diet.
However, some dietary restrictions and lifestyles may see the body unable to receive as many essential amino acids as it needs. This is where amino acid supplements can help.
What are amino acids?
Amino acids are components found in the macronutrient protein. Ensuring your diet includes the correct volumes and ratios of amino acids will ensure the protein in your body can correctly synthesise the hormones your body uses as communicators. They also work to help build and maintain muscle fibres.
The body cannot create the essential amino acids we need, so we must get them from foods or supplements.
What is the benefit of amino acid supplements?
Aromatic amino acids such as tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine are the precursors for the key neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine (a hormone that works both as a neurotransmitter and to help regulate blood pressure). Both aromatic amino acids and GABA (a counterbalance to norepinephrine, a calming amino acid that can help promote healthier sleep) are crucial amino acids that may help to enhance cognitive performance and neurochemical repairs.
Without the correct balance of aromatic amino acids, you might find yourself experiencing too low or too high levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine - potentially leading to stress, disturbed sleep and low mood.
Taking amino acid supplements is a great way to ensure you get the correct dose if your diet or ideal volume of food consumption doesn’t allow it. However, as with all supplements, you should always speak with a medical expert before adding any new supplements into your routine.
