5-HTP, short for 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a derivative of tryptophan, an amino acid that is present in high protein foods such as meat and dairy products. The body makes its own 5-HTP from tryptophan, and in the brain the 5-HTP is converted into the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Take up to three tablets daily, half an hour before meals or half an hour before bedtime. Start on one tablet and increase if necessary or as directed by a practitioner or pharmacist. 5-HTP is best taken for periods of up to three months.
