Zinc is an essential mineral for people of all ages to lead a happy and healthy life, as it supports numerous bodily functions. Adding zinc into your daily routine, alongside a healthy and balanced diet, is a great way to give your immune system and overall wellbeing a little extra support.

What is zinc?

Although not naturally occurring in the body, zinc is an essential mineral for several bodily functions, so it must be acquired through diet. However, zinc is mostly present in foods unsuitable for vegans and vegetarians, so you may need to take a supplement instead. If you're older or have a weakened immune system, taking zinc supplements for extra immunity support may also be beneficial.

What is zinc used for?

Zinc is present in every single cell of the human body and controls over 300 enzymes, despite not being a naturally occurring mineral.

What is zinc good for?

Zinc is said to have many brilliant benefits for the body. Whilst the most notable is supporting the immune system, others include:

Helping the body process fats, carbohydrates and proteins.
Contributing to the maintenance of normal bone health.
Supporting healthy nails, hair and skin.
Supporting good eye health and normal vision.
Helping with cell growth and cell development by playing a role in protein production and DNA synthesis.

What foods contain zinc?

Plenty of nutritious foods contain zinc and act as great natural sources of this essential nutrient. These include meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, beans, chickpeas and lentils, quinoa, tofu, linseed, chia, pumpkin and hemp seeds, as well as cashews and walnuts

As vegans and vegetarians are only thought to receive up to half as much zinc through their diet as meat or fish eaters, you may need to introduce zinc supplements to make up a healthy balance. It's recommended that adult males get 9.5mg of zinc per day and 7mg for adult females.

As with any supplement, please read the dosage instructions carefully and always consult your doctor before taking a new supplement.
